Vox Cites HCFO-Funded Study on Limited Effect of Hospital Pay-for-Performance Program in First Year

In a Vox [1]editorial, Sarah Kliff reviewed the progress of Medicare’s Hospital Value-Based Purchasing (HVBP) program, which provides financial incentives for hospitals to improve medical care. Kliff cited findings from a study funded in part by HCFO, which found [2]that the timing of the HVBP incentives had no effect on quality improvement. Commenting on the findings, principal investigator Andrew Ryan, Ph.D., Weill Cornell Medical College, noted, “We would have hoped to have seen more responsiveness." In his HCFO-funded study [3], Ryan and colleagues evaluated the effect of the HVBP program on quality of care during the program’s first year of implementation.
