The Associated Press quoted HCFO researcher Glenn Melnick, Ph.D., University of Southern California, on the federal “fair pricing” provision, which aims to protect uninsured patients from being charged more than their insured counterparts for hospital services. In his HCFO-funded study, Melnick and colleagues found that the California fair pricing law passed in 2011 effectively reduced hospital charges to uninsured patients. Melnick noted that the federal law lacks enforcement provisions and suggested the California law could serve as a model for other states.
