Former HCFO grantee Ateev Mehrotra, M.D., Harvard Medical School and the RAND Corporation, was quoted in a New York Times article that described the rise of urgent care centers and their potential for delivering both convenience and profit. Mehrotra discussed the emphasis consumers place on convenience, noting, “We expect to do our banking 24 hours a day, seven days a week… so now we want our health care to be 24/7.” Mehrotra’s HCFO-funded work examined a related revolution in health care delivery – retail clinics. He and his colleagues found that while retail clinics are growing rapidly in terms of their popularity, the presence of these clinics may interrupt continuity with a primary care provider.
