HCFO grantee Joseph P. Newhouse, Ph.D., John D. MacArthur Professor of Health Policy and Management at Harvard University, has been named chair of an IOM committee that will examine how geographic variation may be related to several factors including the cost, supply, and quality of care, patient population diversity, insurance coverage, and physician behavior. The committee will recommend changes to Medicare payment systems to promote high-value care. Dr. Newhouse has been a principal investigator on several HCFO grants. His most recent project examined reimbursement policies of chemotherapy drugs.
