HCFO Grantee Quoted in February 4 BusinessWeek Article on Disease Management
Randall Brown, Ph.D., vice president, Mathematica Policy Research, Inc., was quoted in the February 4 BusinessWeek article, “Take Your Meds, Exercise—and Spend Billions.” The article discusses the increased utilization of disease management services as well as the lack of evidence suggesting that disease management programs lower costs. Brown states, “We have already wasted a lot of money on disease management…I’m worried we could throw more money down the drain.” Brown and co-PI Deborah Peikes, Ph.D., senior researcher, Mathematica Policy Research, Inc., completed HCFO-sponsored research that tested the ability of disease management and care coordination programs to control health care costs, examining which features make certain programs effective, for which target populations, and how they can be replicated.
