Publication Date:
June 2, 2014
Recent HCFO grantee, James C. Robinson, Ph.D., University of California Berkeley, contributed an essay on reference pricing to the National Institute for Health Care Management’s Expert Voices series. In the essay, Robinson reviews evidence on the effectiveness of reference pricing to encourage consumers to make high-value choices as well as enhance competition in hospitals’ prices. Robinson’s HCFO-funded study began on June 1, 2014, and this project will examine the impact of reference pricing on consumer choice and provider pricing for laboratory tests and diagnostic imaging using claims data from Safeway, a national food retailer, wholesaler and manufacturer.
