In a commentary on pay-for-performance, The Incidental Economist featured findings from a study funded in-part by HCFO that evaluated Medicare’s Hospital Value-Based Purchasing (HVBP) program in its first year. In his HCFO-funded study, Andrew Ryan, Ph.D., Weill Cornell Medical College, and colleagues evaluated the effect of the program on quality and found that the timing of the financial incentives in HVBP was not associated with improved quality of care for either the clinical process or patient experience measures.
