HCFO-funded work led by Patricia Ketsche, Ph.D., and E. Kathleen Adams, Ph.D., was highlighted in The Financial. The article, "Hidden Health Care Costs Hit Low-Income Families Hardest [2]," details their findings that low-income families bear a disproportionate burden in the financing of national health spending.

Following recent publication in Health Affairs, HCFO-funded work led by Glenn Melnick, Ph.D., has been highlighted in several media outlets. The focus of his work, market consolidation, is related to a September 9, 2011 House Ways and Means Subcommittee Hearing on the implications of hospital mergers and acquisitions.

On September 8, 2011, Health Affairs held a briefing [8] to unveil its September 2011 issue, "The New Urgency to Lower Costs." The issue featured two articles from HCFO-funded studies and their authors spoke at the briefing.

HCFO-funded work led by Lawrence Casalino, M.D., Ph.D., was featured on the Well Blog of the New York Times. The article, "An Insurance Maze for U.S. Doctors [10]," detailed Casalino's finding that U.S. doctors spend approximately four times as much time as their Canadian counterparts dealing with insurers.

HCFO grantees Niteesh Choudhry, M.D., Ph.D., and Matthew Maciejewski, Ph.D., will be featured faculty at the National Value-Based Insurance Design Summit. This event will take place in Washington, D.C., October 26-28, 2011. In their current HCFO-funded studies, Choudhry and Maciejewski examine factors associated with value-based insurance design programs.

 HCFO grantee Donald Taylor, Jr., Ph.D., of Duke University, recently published Balancing the Budget is a Progressive Priority [13]. The book outlines policy steps for acheiving a balanced budget and address the role of health care reform in reaching this goal. His current HCFO grant is assessing the relationship between use, quality, and cost in the Medicare hospice benefit across different care settings.

His study, recently published in Health Affairs, found that US physicians spend four times as much money interacting with insurance companies as their counterparts in Canada.
